In this paper, starting from the negotiations between Yuan Shikai and the United Kingdom in the late Qing Dynasty,we study how Yuan Shikai made decisions and safeguarded the national interests in dealing with foreign affairs related to the United Kingdom in different periods of time.By comparing the attitudes of Yuan Shikai with those of others, and comparing the situations of all parties involved, the author reflects the attitudes and policies of Yuan Shikai and British diplomacy in different periods. To the greatest extent, explore and sort out Yuan Shikai’s diplomacy with Britain. In the study,we found that Yuan Shikai is not just a "national thieves" impression,we can not deny what he has done.In the late Qing Dynasty, when the Qing government and Britain had interests disputes,Yuan Shikai firmly defended national sovereignty and territorial integrity. The Brooks case, the Kaiping Coal Mine case and the Xijiang Cruise case all showed that Yuan Shikai actively safeguarded national interests during his term of office.Yuan Shikai contrasted sharply with officials who sold state rights and interests at the same time.
