At the beginning of 2018,the new edition of English Curriculum Standard for Senior High School(Curriculum Standard 2017)was issued by the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China. The reform is a major breakthrough in English teaching of senior high school in China, which puts forward the concepts of developing students’ key competences in English, taking students as the core and paying attention to students’ comprehensive ability to use English.Curriculum Standard 2017 points out that the receptive skills refer to the three skills of listening, reading and viewing.Compared with Curriculum Standard 2003,“viewing” is a new component. The modification is to meet the needs of the new media era. There are 16 evaluation criteria in Curriculum Standard 2017,which comprehensively evaluate students’ listening, reading and viewing in compulsory modules among senior high school students. However,in former studies, researchers mainly focus on one specific skill, without a comprehensive consideration of the three skills, and let alone the investigation of the current situation of the receptive skills among senior high school students.Grade 10 students are at the critical stage of connecting junior high and senior high school study.Based on the actual situation of teaching and literature study, including Curriculum Standard 2017 and The TKT Course, the thesis aims to investigate the current situation of Grade 10 students in understanding English content and meaning, the current situation of Grade 10 students in understanding English language form and habit, and the differences in gender. In the thesis, questionnaire, interview and test paper are used as the research instruments.Five municipal schools and five county-level schools in Hebei Province are selected, with 100 students from each school and a total of 1000 students as the subjects, and the author collects a total of 935 valid questionnaires, with an effective rate of 93.5%.Then the author analyzes and discusses the current situation from the perspectives of English content and meaning,English language form and habit, and the comparison between boys and girls.According to the result of the questionnaire analysis, interviews are conducted with 10 students and 10 teachers, and the comprehensive conclusion is drawn. The test paper which is used as asupplement is selected from the final exam of the first semester of Grade 10 in Tangshan in the 2018-2019 school year. One school is selected to analyze the mean of the receptive skills among students, and the result is compared with that of the questionnaire to verify whether they are consistent. The findings are as follows: First of all, students perform well in English content and meaning. For the four factors of it,main idea and prediction are the advantages.Specific information and attitude are the disadvantages.Furthermore, students perform poorly in English language form and habit. For the three factors of it,structure and detail are the advantages.Habit is the disadvantage.Last but not least,it can be seen that boys are not as good as girls in terms of English content and meaning.Among the four factors of English content and meaning, boys have no obvious differences with girls in main idea and attitude, but perform worse than girls in specific information and prediction. In terms of English language form and habit, boys are not as good as girls on the whole.Among the three factors of it,boys are obviously inferior to girls in structure, detail and habit. In the questionnaire, each of the factors above consists of some items, which represent different abilities of the receptive skills, and the abilities are analyzed in the thesis whether they are students’ advantages or not.
