Taking Daniel Gile’s "Effort Model" and Kilian G..Seeber’s "Cognitive Load Model" as the theoretical basis,this study aims to explore the pause phenomenon in English-Chinese sight translation of beginning learners and advanced learners.In order to achieve this research purpose,this study puts forward the three research questions:(1)What are the pause phenomena of beginning learners and advanced learners in English-Chinese sight translation?(2)What is the discrepancy of the pause phenomenon between beginning learners and advanced learners in English-Chinese sight translation?(3)What are the reasons for the discrepancy of the pause phenomenon between beginning learners and advanced learners?In order to answer the research questions,this study combining quantitative and qualitative research,uses a comprehensive empirical research design based on test and experiment,supplemented by retrospective interview and semi-structured interview.Through the language and interpreting tests,research subjects are third-year undergraduates as beginning learners and first-year postgraduates as advanced learners in the School of Advanced Translation and Interpretation of a foreign language university in Northeast China.This study explores and compares the pause phenomenon in English-Chinese sight translation of these two groups,and analyzes the discrepancy and the reasons for it.Based on previous studies,this study compared the three types of pauses in the performance of these two groups,and found that advanced learners had less pauses than beginners.Combining the analysis of their interviews,this study finds that the reasons for the discrepancy of pause are reflected in the different abilities of information discrimination,bilingual conversion and strategy use.This study partially verifies the cognitive load in interpreting from the perspective of sight translation.In addition,this study can help to improve the quality of output and provide the reference value for studies,practice,teaching and textbook of sight translation.
