China is the country that makes pottery and porcelain,the history that produces use pottery and porcelain is long,pottery and porcelain develops uninterrupted.Tri-colored of the Tang Dynasty and tri-colored of the Liao Dynasty were of great importance in ancient China because of their bright colors and rich shapes.Both of them belong to the color pottery of low-temperature lead glaze,and the production process is roughly similar,but they have many differences in the greenware,glaze and firing.It is of great significance to study the production level of ceramics in the Tang and Liao Dynasties,the development and evolution of the production processes of Chinese colored pottery and the conservation and restoration of the two.In this paper,tri-colored of the Tang Dynasty and the tri-colored of the Liao Dynasty both production processes and production facilities as the main research content.Based on this,the similarities and differences of the two production processes are analyzed,and then the similarities and differences in the protection and restoration of cultural relics caused by the different production processes are explored.Centering on this center,this paper makes a large amount of use of archaeological literature,ceramicproduction process literature and relevant experimental data,and uses inductive analysis and comparative research methods to compare the two production processes.The main body of this paper includes three parts.The first part is an overview of relevant issues,including the background and archaeological excavation.The second part is the main body of this paper:tri-colored of the Tang Dynasty and the tri-colored of the Liao Dynasty both production processes comparison.This part takes the process of making tri-colored glazed pottery as the clue,and makes a comparative analysis of the three parts,namely,the blanking,glazing and firing,explore and analyze the processes characteristic,relation of both.The third part is based on the previous comparative analysis to explore the influence of the production process on the protection and restoration of the two.This paper mainly comes to the following general conclusions:First is that both are produced using the same craft and process,using local materials.In both cases,the clay is formed by rolling or moulding and then fired with lead glaze under oxidizing atmosphere.Second,tri-colored of the Tang Dynasty is more diverse in shape,decoration and glaze color.The types of decorative patterns are diverse,the use of kiln furniture is better than the other one and it produced in different areas has different materials and processes.Third,tri-colored of the Liao Dynasty blanking process and glazing process are relatively simple and rough,and the shape and system are mainly vessels,generally using making-up clay.Judgingfrom glaze of tri-colored of the Liao dynasty and the sintering degree of glazed pottery,the composition and sintering degree of tri-colored of the Liao samples are more balanced,the scale of kiln may be larger,and the structure of kiln represented by the Longquanwu Kiln may be better than that of Tang dynasty.The process of replacing lead with boron as flux in tri-colored of the Liao Dynastye is a significant progress that cannot be ignored in Liao tri-colored glaze.The patterns,shapes and decorative processes of tri-colored of the Liao Dynasty all reflect the strong national characteristics.Fourth,both are more vulnerable to damage than porcelain,and their hardness and strength are relatively low.In the operation of both protection and repair,attention should be paid to use proper the cleaning,reinforcement,adhesion,repair and other aspects of both pottery blank or glaze.meanwhile tri-colored of the Tang Dynasty figures have no glaze on their faces,in the repair should pay attention to the face of the color fixation and reinforcement treatment.In the case of glaze shedding,attention should be paid to the protection and repair of tri-colored of the Liao dynasty making-up clay.Analysis of the production process of cultural relics is the premise of conservation and restoration work,which specifically involves the analysis of cultural relics’ own materials,production tools,production methods and other contents.A comparative study of the two production processes can provide a more comprehensive and specific understanding of the twoproduction methods and materials,so as to provide a more scientific and targeted theoretical basis for the protection and restoration of the two and better preserve the value of cultural relics.
