Vocabulary plays a crucial role during the process of language learning. In 1972,Wilkins,a famous linguist once stated that without grammar we can convey very little things, but we can convey nothing without vocabulary.Since the New Curriculum Standards was put forward, the reform of English vocabulary teaching also has altered and it has been a research hotspot to analyze and discuss whether English vocabulary teaching in senior high school is in accordance with the New Curriculum Standards. For a majority of students, they should face the main problem of learning English is to overcome the barrier of vocabulary.Although vocabulary costs teachers and students' a lot of time and energy, the effect is not obvious. For a long time, many teachers and scholars have done a lot of research on the methods and strategies of English vocabulary learning. However, the literature shows that most of the subjects studied are college students and junior high school students, but few of the researches take senior high school students as the research subjects, and even less about rural high school students' vocabulary learning.According to the virtual reality of English teaching practice and guided by the theory of vocabulary learning strategies, the present author,by means of literature review, questionnaires and interviews, conducts the research of English vocabulary learning by taking 100 students of Senior One in Aizhou Middle School of Zhanjiang City,Guangdong Province as the research subjects to investigate the present situation of English vocabulary learning among rural senior high school students. The main purpose is to understand their vocabulary learning concepts, learning methods and strategies,as well as the common difficulties they encounter, and then to discuss the corresponding countermeasures on the basis of analyzing the causes of the difficulties and problems. Therefore, two specific questions have been set up:(1)what is the general understanding of English vocabulary learning strategies of rural high school students?(2)What is the current status of the application of English vocabulary learning strategies of rural high school students? And what are the major problems they often have? The findings of the investigation and analysis are as follows:(1)although the respondents generally believe that English vocabulary is very important to English learning, most of them lack much understanding something about English vocabulary learning strategies.(2)The average score of using vocabulary learning strategies of the respondents is 3.05,indicating that the frequency of the respondents' using vocabulary learning strategies is low.Social affective strategies and resource strategies are used less frequently, while cognitive strategies and meta-cognitive strategies are used more frequently. The main factor causing the problem is that rural high school students do not know what the vocabulary learning strategies are,so they do not know clearly how to use them effectively.According to the findings above and from the viewpoint of helping students to further improve the efficiency of applying English vocabulary strategies, the present research proposes three suggestions as follows: Firstly,it helps students further improve their awareness of English vocabulary learning strategies based on the requirements of the New English Curriculum Standards.Secondly,it helps students further strengthen their methods of using English vocabulary learning strategies.Thirdly,it is necessary to further optimize English learning resources for the purpose of providing more convenience to students' application of English vocabulary learning strategies.
