| Textbook plays an important role in English teaching,and it provides listening materials,speaking materials,reading materials and writing materials for students.Reading materials are the largest and most important parts in the textbook.Reading materials contain a great deal of vocabulary,phrases,grammar and sentence structures.Students can obtain the linguistic knowledge and skills by learning the reading materials.Thus,choosing and making use of the reading materials in the textbook have a deep impact on students’ reading and English teaching.The researcher compares and evaluates two compulsory English textbooks commonly used in Northern of Shaanxi: New Senior English For China(PEP version)and New Standard English(FLTRP version)for senior students.The research is based on the General High English Curriculum Standards(2017),employs Cheng Xiaotang’s internal and external evaluation method to evaluate the two versions.Internal method is to analyze the features of the reading materials of the two versions on genre,topics,length,exercises and grammar,which aims to find out which textbook is more coincident with the reading objectives set in English Curriculum Standards.External evaluation is to make use of questionnaire method to know the general views of the teachers and students who use the two versions.The results show that,in some way,the reading materials in two textbooks are corresponding with the English Curriculum Standards for reading objectives.As for topics,both of them are various and interesting,most of the topics are close to students’ life and attract students’ attention.In terms of genre,both of them are diverse,and they both contain all kinds of discourse types.As for length,the reading materials in FLTRPare more reasonable.As for exercises,both of the two versions are various,but the key points in two versions are sightly different.The grammar in two textbooks is diverse,and some different and key grammar is stressed,such as attributive clause,adverbial clause and so on.According to the results,some suggestions are put forward on the effective use of them for senior high school in Northern Shaanxi. |
