In recent years, smog in China is becoming more and more serious, which has exerted a serious impact on people’s daily life and caused a universal concern.Different media report on China’s air pollution from different perspectives.Because the ideological environm en t to which the news report belongs is different from the power subject represented, the subordinate subjective ideology makes a subtle impact on the reader’ s perception and judgment.Critical discourse analysis studies th e symbiotic relationship between language, power and ideology:which aims to reveal the ideology contained in the discourse and explain its generation process and social conditions. With th e deepening of research, mainstream critical discourse analysis has been widely criticized for lack of discussion of cognitive factors. In recent years, more and more cognitive lin.guistics research results such as metaphor, metonymy and categorization have been applied to the analysis of CDA,but the combination of Frane Theory and CDA is rare.Based on the Frame Theory, this thesis selects 15 reports on China’s smog respectively from two mainstream news media,China Daily and the New York Times,as the corpus for CDA,which is conducted at the levels of vocabulary, discourse and text to explore the new path of discourse analysis in news discourse, and achieve a more comprehensive analysis of news discourse ideology at the cognitive levelIn the theoretical frame of CDA,the author makes a critical analysis of 15 news reports on China’s smog published by China Daily and New York Times, aiming to address the following three issues:(1)What language strategies are used by the New York Times and China Daily in repor ting on smog in China?(2)What kind of ideology do the New York Times and China Daily hide in the news report on smog in China?(3)How do these ideologies influence the reader’s cognition? The research results of this thesis show that news reports are not always objective. There are many differences in the reports of the same incident in China Daily and the New York Times.Secondly,Frame Theory can be used as an effective tool for CDA,and can provide enlightenment for the study of CDA in terms of vocabulary, sentences and discourse.Thirdly, through the use of Frame Theory for CDA,it is found that New York Times and China Daily convey different ideologies. In the news report, the former implied the accusation of China’s environment and economy, and shaped a relatively negative image of China, implying the negative role of the Chinese government in responding to the smog phenom enon.Fourthly, the different frames and ideologies highlighted in the news are closely related to their social background. This thesis analyzes the discourse criticism of news reports on smog in China, using Frame Theory, which helps readers to better understand the hidden ideology behind the news, sharpens readers’ critical reading consciousn ess,and improve readers’ critical reading ability.
