Dialect plays a very important role on sociolinguistics research through its own unique features and functions.Dialect is a kind of language which possesses great application value.Day by day many scholars have conducted research on the application of dialects and have obtained great achievements in this area.In recent years,a large number of dialect words are adopted in news media,particularly many newspapers have adopted dialect words to form their news headlines thus it may catch the eyes of readers quickly and achieve the purpose of delivering effective news.Regarding this special application of dialect words,this thesis combines the features and functions of dialect to conduct some research on the application of dialect words in newspaper headlines from sociolinguistics perspective.The exhaustive recording method will be adopted to collect the dialect words from the local Wuhanese newspaper headlines e.g.Chutian Metropolis Daily,Wuhan Golden Daily,Wuhan Morning News and Wuhan Evening News from June to September in 2017.This thesis adopts the qualitative method to analyze the application characteristics of dialect words in the newspaper headlines from different angles,such as localization of newspapers,column distribution of dialect words,and function distribution of dialect words.After profound analysis of the application characteristics of these adopted dialect words,this thesis summarizes some selection methods for dialect words in the newspaper headlines and illustrates some restrictions for dialect words in newspaper headlines.This thesis has a certain application value and may make dialect words effectively serve the public.
