A Report On E-C Translation Of The Cambridge History Of The English Language Volume Ⅲ(Chapters 5.6-6.2)

The translation report narrates the E-C translation practice of section 6,chapter 5,and section 1 to 2,chapter 6 of The Cambridge History of the English Language Volume Ⅲ.The three sections translated by the author covers themes of semantic change,time frame of Early Modern English,categorisation of English varieties and the standardization of English.The translation of the original text into Chinese provides its readers with a full and authoritative account of the history of Early Modern English.The translation report was carried out under the guidance of Vinay & Darbelnet’s translation model,which consists of two general translation strategies including direct translation and oblique translation.To be more specific,the former one contains three procedures: borrowing,calque and literal translation;while the latter one comprises four procedures including transposition,modulation,equivalence and adaptation.Based on this model,the author tries to convey faithfully the information of the source text and its culture,whilst improve the readability of the translated version,thereby enabling its readers accessible to a deeper understanding of the history of Early Modern English.The report consists of five chapters.The first chapter includes the background of the project,the review on the studies of English history at home and abroad and thesignificance of the project;the second part is about pre-translation,covering the analysis of source text and parallel texts;the third chapter introduces Vinay &Darbelnet’s translation model and the feasibility of applying this model;the fourth one is the body part of the report.The cases are analyzed according to the translation model.The final chapter leads to the conclusion of this report.
