A Study Of Diplomatic Interpreting From The Perspective Of Cooperative Principle

Along with our country’s comprehensive strength increasing and continuous improvement of international status,more diplomatic activities emerge in China.As a mediator of communication,an interpreter plays an important role during the process of diplomatic interpreting.This thesis studies the cases of observing and violating cooperative principle in diplomatic interpreting.This thesis starts with observance and violation of cooperative principle by the interpreter,the influence of cooperative principle on diplomatic interpreting,and the limitations of cooperative principle in diplomatic interpreting.This thesis takes the interpreting of Wang Yi’s and Li Keqiang’s press conferences in 2018 as cases.The thesis analyzes specific examples on the basis of the four subprinciples of cooperative principle,which are maxim of quantity,maxim of quality,maxim of relation and maxim of manner so as to study the observance and the violation of cooperative principle in diplomatic interpreting.After analyzing the cases on the basis of cooperative principle,this thesis comes to the following conclusions: cooperative principle has certain guiding significance for analyzing diplomatic interpreting but due to the limitations of time,the interpreter may violate some maxims on the premise of ensuring the integrity of information.The thesis hopes to further study cooperative principle and diplomatic interpreting so that the interpreter can adopt cooperative principle with more flexibility to improve the quality of interpreting activities and communicate more effectively.
