A Study On Interpreting Methods Of Chinese Euphemisms In Political Diplomacy Under Modern Category Theory

Euphemisms have been playing an extremely important role in political diplomacy.On political diplomatic occasions,the information organizer indirectly expresses the negative emotions in a specific context by means of grammar,semantics and other means,so as to avoid the uncomfortable emotions of the information readers and optimize the communicative effect.At this time,an interpreter,also a diplomat,plays a significant role.Interpreting in political diplomacy is related to the future and development of a country,and appropriate interpreting methods can improve its acceptability.In order to achieve the same result as the source language,interpreters often adopt different interpreting methods to deal with different euphemisms.This thesis uses modern category theory to analyze the interpreting methods of Chinese euphemisms in political diplomacy.Based on the results of domestic scholar Shao Junhang’s classification of euphemisms in terms of pragmatic functions,this paper divides the corpus-based euphemisms in Chinese from the context of political diplomacy into three categories,including egoistic euphemisms,philanthropic euphemisms and altruistic euphemisms.Under this classification,the interpreting methods of all the cases are summarized and analyzed in detail by using modern category theory.The analysis process includes not only the explanation of the contents and interpreting methods,but also the analysis of the formation of euphemisms.So far,most of the studies on the methods or strategies of interpreting of Chinese euphemisms have focused on literal translation and free translation.However,this paper makes a detailed summary of the interpreting methods used by the interpreters and brings forth new ones.The interpreting methods of Chinese euphemisms summarized in this thesis include applying equivalent words,replacing degree with the specific description,changing initiative behaviors to passive victimization,using a neutral word with the same meaning and discarding the euphemistic way.Interpreters should not only attach importance to Chinese euphemisms in political diplomacy,but also master the interpreting methods of Chinese euphemisms in political diplomacy in a proper way.It is hoped that this paper will bring some enlightenment to the interpreters from a new perspective on the interpreting methods of Chinese euphemisms in political diplomacy.
