| In recent years,the number of students for the Program of Master of Translation and Interpreting(MTI)has been growing,including some students who have cross-disciplinary background.Sight interpretation is a basic skill for interpretation and translation and has been frequently used in interpreter training.For this reason,there are lots of studies on sight interpretation.This present paper is an experimental study which intends to investigate the influence of cross-disciplinary background on E-C sight interpretation from the perspective of schema theory.Based on the analysis of the results,the author draws the following conclusions:(1)In terms of accuracy,the schematic knowledge of the cross-disciplinary background participants correlates positively with success of sight interpretation,especially when dealing with professional words or phrases.(2)Compared with the common English maj or interpreters,interpreters who have cross-disciplinary background can adopt deverbalization better in their sight interpretation.(3)Recordings of the interpreters with cross-disciplinary background are not markedly smoother.They also have many self-corrections,pauses and fillers,like "um" and"ah".(4)The hypothesis that supplementing background knowledge could make up for the deficiency of professional knowledge is not always accurate.Interpreters can easily get higher scores in sight interpretation of texts concerning humanities and social sciences with a short-term preparation,while texts concerning natural sciences are not in line with this rule.(5)The schematic knowledge can help and guide interpretation;however,schema theory cannot explain every situation,because the success of sight interpretation involves many factors,including individual differences in encyclopedic knowledge and bilingual competence. |
