The year 2003 saw the real debut of Chinese-style pop songs in Jay Chou’s Breezes into Pieces.Since then,Chinese-style pop songs have gained great popularity both at home and abroad. Most scholars have made researches on Chinese-style pop songs, such as text analysis of their lyrics, their social context and cultural origin and so on.Few of them have made systematic analyses under Xu Yuanchong’s translation theories, especially under the “Three Beauties” theory. And the translation circle has long admired English song translation and dubbing. With beauty in sound, beauty in form and beauty in sense,Chinese-style pop songs need translating and dubbing to enhance cultural exchanges between the East and West.Under the guidance of the “Three Beauties”theory and musical knowledge, this thesis attempts to prove the applicability of the“Three Beauties” theory in Chinese-style pop song translation and dubbing both theoretically and practically. The thesis deals with Chinese-style pop song translation and dubbing by means of induction and case analyses to expound the theoretical and practical value of the “Three Beauties” theory.Comparative analyses of Chinese-style and English pop songs are made to explore some principles and strategies in the process of Chinese-style pop song translation and dubbing. From this study, the major findings are summarized as follows: First, the “Three Beauties” theory in poetry translation also applies to Chinese-style pop song translation and dubbing.Translators should use proper methods to retain the “Three Beauties” while translating and dubbing Chinese-style pop songs.Second, translation strategies under the“Three Transforms” theory can be flexibly adopted to deal with sound, form and sense.Third, the “Three Beauties” should strike a relative balance among the translated texts in song translation and dubbing. It is hoped that this study may serve as a reference for Chinese-style pop song translation and dubbing.
