| The intensive animal production in China is still in its infancy, setting down requirement upon the country to draw on European experience of animal health and welfare in terms of their achievements in organic agriculture. The salutary reference emphasizes more on the demand of animal welfare, which would probably introduce change in domestic concepts of production and management, facilitating ecological harmony between human and animal. The author selects Chapter 4 “Organic Livestock Standards” and Chapter 17“Organic Animal Husbandry: the Future Challenges” from the book,Animal Health and Welfare in Organic Agriculture,as the source text of the English-Chinese translation project. It is an academic text with compact lines and strict logic. The translation practice is a typical case with high requirement to the understanding and reconstruction of textual cohesion. The textual cohesion theory of Systemic Functional Linguistics is used to ensure effective cross-linguistic delivery of research findings and instructive ideas of organic livestock and to keep the translation in a rigorous academic style and idiomatic way of expression. The author works on the effect of textual cohesion on the understanding and reconstruction of text through comparing two translations. As a result of the case analysis, the textual cohesion strategies adopted by the translator directly influence the quality of translation such as correctness of meaning and accuracy of expression, including conversion of reference, recognition of synonymy and reconstruction of collocation. The analysis of the report is based on the translation of the author.Given the wide range of cohesion and the limited length of this report,it only takes some of textual cohesion to study the translation, and further study of other issues is needed. |
