The report intends to study how the author finishes her translation of An Old-fashioned Girl under the guidance of Grice?s Conversational Implicatures(1975)in the course of preparation, translation and assessment. An Old-fashioned Girl,a children?s novel,is not purely a kind of reading source but a significant part of children literature, which becomes a medium for the communications among children. The constant emergence of excellent children literatures around the world enhances the exchanges of children and shortens the distance between them.Due to differences in language and unique expres sions, children literature translation becomes more important. The author selects Chapters Six and Seven to do translation practices. They have offered readers many dialogues between characters. The author determines to adopt Grice?s Conversional Implicatures to explore the implicatures of dialogues and guide her translation practice as the pragmatics offers alternative perspectives for translation studies. She attempts to illustrate the vivid and interesting language features of children in the source text based on the characteristics of children literature.Griceholds that both the speaker and the hearer should observe one general principleCooperative Principle in conversations to express each other?s intention and try to achieve a successful communication. There are four maxims of Cooperative Principle: quantity, quality, relation and manner. However, participants in conversation often deliberately violate one or more maxims, thenthe implicatures occur. In the applications of these four maxims in guiding translation, the author firstly analyzes the implied meaning of the participant?s utterances due to his or her violation of one of maxims. Then in choosing the target language, she attempts to do the following: 1)transferring the implicatures in a reasonable way without inadequate or redundant information;2)being faithful to the source text and ensure its reliability;3)considering the context and making the information relevant and 4)expressing in a clear and simple way without any ambiguity. In ter ms of concrete violations of maxims, the author adopts different translation skills in example analysis ofAn Old-fashioned Girl.In the end, combiningrenderings with the characteristics of children literature and its language, the author makes appropriate target linguistic choices to convey the characters? implicatures. This report summarizes its major findings and points out the problems encountered and gives possible solutions. It has proved the feasibility by applying pragmatic theory into fiction conversation translation. At the same time, the report helps the author to realize that her translation remains to be further improved.
