A Study Of Self-consistency Principle In English-Chinese Classifier Structure Under The Perspective Of Embodied Philosophy

The embodied philosophy mainly includes three basic principles: the experiential nature of the mind,the unconsciousness of the cognition,and the metaphor of the mind.Among them,the experiential nature of the mind suggests that our categories,concepts,reasoning,and mind are not an objective,but are formed by our physical experience,especially by our sensory motor system.The formation of concepts is through our body and brain experience interact with the outside world,and can only be understood through them.Most abstract concepts are constructed through metaphors and are not autonomous,and cannot be independent from the physical intelligence of the body,but based on physical experience.So we can say that most language is formed through humans' everyday usage and experience.The embodied mind emphasizes that human categories,concepts,reasoning,and minds are formed by personal physical experience,in turn,our body and brain are the basis of concepts,categories,minds and reasoning.The conceptual system is from our own body.Lakoff(2002)proposed that meaning is also based on our physical experience.It is also formed through our physical experience.Human physical experience is the cornerstone of the formation of language,and it is embodiment.As a part of language,the formation and usage of classifier structure must be influenced by human physical experience and cognitive initiative.This thesis combines the embodied philosophy with self-consistency principle to analyze English-Chinese classifiers,to study subjective initiative in the using process of classifier structure from macro-perspective,and to unveil the cognitive subject that human played and the principle of cognitive self-consistency that human followed in the construction of classifier structure.The self-consistency principle in logic refers to consistency and continuity before and after the formation of language.The cognitive subject uses one's own subjective judgment and thinking to self-consistent,self-coordination,self-checking,selfidentification,self-satisfaction,and self-confidence for the appropriateness of coordination.Cognitive subjects using self-consistent principles need to have basic encyclopedic knowledge,grasp of the laws of the world and individual factors such as life experience;without these elements,the utility of the self-consistency principle will be weakened;on the contrary,the utility will be enhanced.Classifier structure,as a language phenomenon people use every day and many researchers have made many studies on it,there still exists many questions unsolved,is a conventionalized form under thousands years' usage,which is affected by historical and social factors,especially,we can't ignore,the role of subjective initiative that human played during its formation.As a theory which emphasizes on daily living experiences of human,the application of embodied philosophy here can unveil the participation of cognitive subject in various classifier phenomenon.And cognitive subject in self-consistency principle is a person with encyclopedic knowledge,basic living skill and social relations.It is the first time we relate embodied philosophy and self-consistency principle together,and here I develop the self-consistency principle on the basis of previous one which has changed the effects of self-correctness,self-control,self-direct and self-restrain to the effects of appropriate adjustment,appropriate correction,appropriate control,and appropriate constraints.Compared with the former studies on the English-Chinese classifier structure,the feature of this study is that it tries to analyze classifier structure from both the perspective of structure and meaning,it seeks to help the learners to have better understanding of classifier structure.The purpose is to emphasize how self-consistency principle operate and transform under the participation of cognitive subject in various classifier structures.The biggest innovation of this study is the use of combination between embodied philosophy and self-consistency principle.Considering the current studies of classifier structure are almost devoted on the semantic and structural perspective.This study makes the full use of the dynamic interaction among cognitive subject,objective signifier and the construal embodied in the mind.Here we can see there is a combination of self-consistency principle and embodied philosophy.Self-consistency is not a static containment but a dynamic historical progress.Language development and conventionalization are dynamic,so is self-consistency,which operate the interaction between subject and object.It is subject determined and subjective initiative.In general,cognitive subjects take charge of self-consistency principle to combine with elements like one's own encyclopedia knowledge and life experiences to continuously realize self-correctness,self-control,self-direct and self-restrain in the process of using classifier structure.But here,in this paper,I propose that to realize some special effects,like rhetorical effect,this principle realize appropriate adjustment,appropriate correction,appropriate control,and appropriate constraints effect.To summarizes,this paper explores the cognitive subjectivity phenomenon in the English-Chinese stereotypical and non-stereotypical structure,the fuzziness and flexibility of the classifier structure.With the participation of self-consistency principle of cognitive subjects,this paper explores the appropriate adjustment and appropriate correction,appropriate control and appropriate restraint,and further prove that the classifier structure has experiential characteristics.This thesis' s corpus is based on the current research of English-Chinese classifier structure,but the core purpose is to reveal the importance of subjective initiative.First I represent several stereotypical and non-stereotypical phenomena of English-Chinese classifier structure,then we can find that there exists the participation of cognitive subject,who can use subjective initiative to form or even change the meaning and structure of classifier structure.Through the combination of embodied philosophy and self-consistency principle,hereby cognitive subject takes advantage of appropriate adjustments,appropriate amendments,appropriate controls,and appropriate restraints effects under the operation of self-consistency principle in English-Chinese classifier structure.Then,I still use the combination of experiential philosophy and selfconsistency principle to study the participation of cognitive subject in fuzzy classifier and structural and semantic flexibility in classifier structure.Through the research mechanism mentioned above,we find that there is indeed the participation of cognitive subjects in the formation of the classifier structure.The cognitive subject not only modifies the form of the classifier structure in its formation process,and even changes its form,which embodies the role of cognitive subjects in self-consistency principle.
