George Eliot is one of the most insishtful writers in the Victorian Age.The Mill on the Floss is Eliot's second major work.Throuah the description of the view of man and nature,Eliot emphasizes the idea of harmonious coexistence between man and nature.This thesis is an ecocriticism reading of George Eliot's The Mill on the Floss, embodies George Eliot' s view of human and nature.This thesis focuses on Eliot' s novel The Mill on the Floss to reveal the ecological consciousness to express the author's ideal of which expects the harmony between human beings and nature by using the theory of ecocriticism.This thesis altogether divides in to 5 parts.The first part is the introduction part.Introduction concerns with a general introduction of the ecocriticism,the author's life,the novel The M ill on the Floss;literature review;paper purpose,significance,and method etc.The second part observes the harmonious relationship between man and nature.The harmonious relationship between the Floss River and the Dorlcote Mill:The Floss River supports the Dorlcote Mill.The Dorlcote Mill supports the Floss River;The Harmonious Relationship between the Red Deeps and Maggie:The Red Deeps provides Maggie with natural pleasant.Maggie protects the Red Deeps.The third part pays attention to the conflict between man and nature.The conflict between the country and the Tullivers:The Dorlcote Mill's bankruptcy after human overexploitation.Tom runs the company to redeem the Mill.The conflict between the flood and the Tullivers:The floods caused by human overexploitation after the industrial revolution are nature's silent revenge.It's a reflection of the industrial revolution.The flood shows nature's revolt for survival.The Tullivers shows human's struggle for existence.The fourth part researches ways of reconstructing harmony between man and nature including decentralizing human beings,accepting ecological ideas,returning to nature.The last part is the conclusion.This part emphasizes George Eliot's view of human and nature in The Mill on the Floss from the perspective of ecocriticism.It reflects Eliot' s great concern about the harmony of the whole ecosystem.It is proposed that human must return to nature and rebuild the harmony between human and nature.George Eliot' s suggestion that man and nature live harmoniously is still profound significance to us today.
