According to the statistics, the use frequency of "zuo(?)" ranks 37th among all Chinese characters.Because of its diversified meanings in various contexts,it is widely used not only in everyday expressions but also in written works. Many scholars have made an analysis of the verb "zuo(?)",but very few people explore its translation into English. The verb "zuo(?)" can be either used as a light verb or as a heavy verb. This thesis focuses on the usages of the verb and its C-E translation. This thesis focuses on three issues:what strategy is used in the translations of the verb "zuo(?)" in the CCL bilingual corpus;whether translation strategy is applicable to literary translation;and what the differences are between the translations of the verb "zuo(?)" made by native speakers of English and Chinese. This thesis uses both qualitative and quantitative methods to analyze the translation made by William John Francis Jenner,an English-speaking translator and Anthony C.Yu.a Chinese-speaking translator, and explore the similarities and differences of methods adopted by them in C-E translation. It is found that the compression strategy is adopted in the translation of the verb"zuo(?)" which includes the methods omission and condensation. The former includes the omissions of the verb "zuo(?)" and the verb phrase, and the latter is reflected in the replacement of the verb for an English verb,a verb phrase,a preposition,or another element and implicit condensation. The compression strategy is also used in the translation of literary work Xi You Ji.The English-speaking translator tends to adapt his translation to the target language and cultures better when translating Xi You Ji,mainly from the macro aspects, for example,in terms of thinking mode, aesthetic view, ethical values and pragmatic orientations.and from the micro aspects, for instance,at textual, syntactic and lexical levels.Jenner uses the method of omission more frequently than Yu but less of condensation, which is believed to have adapted his translation to the English context better. The thesis provides theoretical and practical reference for the C-E translation study and English teaching, and further proves the influence of the translator' s mother tongue on the translation from macro and micro aspects. In addition,it also provides a theoretical framework as a reference for relevant translation studies.
