The Study Of The Influence Of Traditional Chinese Cultural Elements On Charles Wright’s Poetry

The translation and the acceptance of classical Chinese poetry among American poets are important to the literary and cultural exchanges between the East and the West in the 20 th century.Ezra Pound,Kenneth Rexroth,William Carlos Williams and other American poets have opened and continued the “Chinese fever” in the forms differed from the contents and the writing styles of traditional western poetry.Charles Wright,which is inherited the tradition of accepting and learning Chinese culture,is one of the most admired poets in the United States.His works have been translated into many languages.Through the study of the elements of traditional Chinese culture contained in Charles Wright’s poetry,this thesis aims to expand the researching field of the acceptance of traditional Chinese culture on American literature.It further deepens the diachronic study of the influence of Chinese traditional culture on American literature.This thesis takes the poems of Wright as the research object.On the basis of close reading method and the comparative poetics between China and the west,combing the poet’s choice and his absorption of traditional Chinese culture elements respectively from the aspects of artistic technique,aesthetic consciousness,religious thought and so on,the author attempts to find out Wright’s poetic thoughts and the reasons for their formation.This thesis contains four parts except the introduction part and the conclusion part.The four parts are the main content of the thesis.The introduction part covers following aspects: the research background,the research actuality,the research significance,the innovative point,the research methods and the research thoughts.This part not only clarifies the basis and significance of the topic,but also presents the logic of the text and provides the framework for the thesis.The first part analyzes the artistic technique of Chinese poetry in Wright’s poetry from the aspects of Wright’s expressive technique and rhetoric technique.The second part is based on the theory of American poetics and classical Chinese poetics to learn about two kinds of Chinese aesthetic consciousness—“viewing things with me” and “viewing things without me” in Wright’s poems.In the third part,this thesis will discuss the thought of Taoist and Zen in Wright’s poetry.The fourth part analyzes the reasons why Wright is influenced by classical Chinese poems and traditional thoughts from the aspects of Wright himself and the background of the eras at that time.Finally,the reasons are summarized in the American social history of 20 th century and Wright’s the construction of personal poetics.The elements of classical Chinese poetry and traditional culture in Wright’s poetry provide new enlightenment for the inheritance and development of Chinese classical poetry tradition in foreign countries.
