A C-E Translation Practice Report From The Perspective Of Catford’s Translation Shift Theory

Kobe Bryant—The Golden Age is a sport-themed biography written by Zhang Jiawei for Kobe’s fans and basketball enthusiasts,which describes Kobe’s fruitful basketball career from the aspects of his childhood and growth,the most important“OK” combination,black mamba spirit of Kobe,championship experience and his late period of basketball career.After Kobe’s announcement of his retirement from NBA,the writer was dedicated to write the book,hoping that the readers could draw some reflection and spiritual wealth from Kobe’s drifting childhood,encouraging growing years and the rise and fall of his basketball career.In 1965,Catford,the famous British linguist and translation theorist defined translation in his book—A Linguistic of Translation and then he put forward the concept of “shift” in On Translation Shift and divided translation into level shift and category shift,which is of great guiding significance to translation practice.Based on the translation shift theory,the research is intended to discuss how the Catford’s translation shift theory guides and expounds the translation of Kobe Bryant—The Golden Age.Combining translation shift theory with practice,the author conducts a case study from the aspects of sports material structure,the characteristics of vocabulary and grammar as well as colloquial text in the source language in the hope to sum up some specific translation skills and solving methods of the similar text type.Through the analysis and research,it is confirmed that Catford’s translation shift theory is suitable and applicable for sport-themed biography.It is an attempt to apply translation shift theory to sports biographical text in translation report practice.Through this attempt,the author has a deeper understanding for Catford’s shift theory and has improved his translation level in a way.Hereon,the author hopes the flawed translation practice report would bring the future readers certain guidance.
