With the development of cognitive linguistics,metaphor as a cognitive phenomenon is widely recognized in all aspects of our lives.With the gradual exploration and analysis of metaphors by scholars,the research content has gradually paid attention to the subject of "humanity" used in metaphor,and then proposed the concept of metaphorical ability.The exploration of metaphor and metaphorical ability has a great promotion and help for second language teaching.The scholars represented by Littlemore have promoted the metaphorical ability to the same level as the language ability and the communicative ability,opening up new ideas for second language learning and teaching.Based on the theoretical basis of predecessors,this paper attempts to test the level of Chinese metaphor ability of foreign students.The whole research is based on the empirical study of the relationship between the metaphorical ability of foreign students and the Chinese level.Through the design of the Chinese Proficiency Test Questionnaire,140 Chinese and English students of the Chinese language level were tested.The author's results were compared with the HSK Chinese Language Proficiency Test scores adopted by the students.The final results showed that the students' metaphorical Chinese proficiency was moderate.The degree of metaphorism is related to the level of Chinese and is positively correlated.But the author also found that metaphorical ability is moderately related to students' language ability.According to the basic information of the students,preliminary classification and investigation were conducted.It was found that group differences,such as gender and time of learning Chinese,were also obvious,but the analysis of the reasons needed further research and investigation,and the basic answer solved the pre-set research problems.Subsequently,the author analyzes and explores the typical data in the experimental data,and obtains some conclusions related to the metaphorical ability of foreign students.First,from the point of view of the meaning of metaphorical words,the students in the middle and upper level of Chinese proficiency have insufficientability to judge the overall meaning of metaphorical meanings.Second,foreign students' understanding of metaphorical meanings is not related to language ability,Chinese learning time and gender factors.There is no effective statistical data in this paper.Third,in the selection and judgment of metaphors,metaphors with similar meanings and similar target domains are easy to confuse students.In addition,the author also found that in the prediction of the difficulty of metaphors,the judgment of native speakers is often different from the difficulties faced by second language learners.In the further interviews with students,the author found that with the improvement of students' Chinese proficiency,the influence of language ability on metaphor ability gradually weakened,and the students' metaphorical ability was more affected by cognitive ability.
