Since 2018,Xiamen University and Babson College have started the Babson Faculty Series project,aiming to introduce classic books on entrepreneurship and innovation to China.In the project,the author of the report translates the book Innovation Judo:Disarming Roadblocks and Blockheads on the Path to Creativity(2014),which provides innovators with tactics on how to deal with innovation obstacles by presenting cases of successful innovation practices.This report is based on the translation of Chapter Three and Chapter Four of this book.The report on the translation consists of five chapters as well as the source text and the target text.Chapter 1 presents a brief background introduction to the project,the significance of the project,the content and linguistic features of the source text and the preparation work before translation.Chapter 2 introduces the theoretical guidance of the report,covering Newmark’s text typology theory,semantic and communicative translation method,and the limitation of previous studies on Newmark’s theories.Chapter 3 illustrates the reason that communicative translation is adopted as a major method in the current project,and explores the requirements as well as related principles of communicative translation.Chapter 4 is devoted to the specific translation techniques from lexical,syntactical and textual levels under the proposed principles of communicative translation.The purpose of the final chapter is to give a brief summary of the report.Based on Newmark’s text typology,the source text indicates both informative and vocative functions.Therefore,the translator should focus on the objective facts of the source text and reading experience of target readers.Communicative translation refers to fully conveying the information of the source text,and attaching importance to target readers.Such features are in accordance with the requirement of the functions of the source text,thus communicative translation is adopted as a major method in the report.By analyzing the requirement of communicative translation,two requirements of cormmunicative translation are summarized,namely the requirement of the accuracy of the message and the readability of the target text.To meet such requirements,three principles including the integrate principle,idiomatic principle and logical principle are put forward in order to achieve the communicative purpose.Based on these principles,detailed translation techniques are explored with specific examples respectively from the lexical,syntactical and textual levels such as conversion,voice shifting,and supplement of connectives.Based on communicative translation,the report examplifies the adaptability of the integrate principle,idiomatic principle and logical principle in the translation of management books with informative and vocative functions,which may prove to be of some value to related translation studies.
