As a foreign language teaching method genre,content-based Instruction(CBI)has emerged since the 1980 s in the West,which is a second language teaching concept.It emphasizes that language learning is based on content,enabling learners to acquire language skills through the learning of authentic language material.According to the proportion of content in the teaching process,the CBI is divided into several different teaching patterns.The CBI theme-based pattern uses the theme as a clue,authentic language material as the content,combining language with content while provides students with a target language environment in class.For language learners who are in a non-target environment,this teaching model can greatly improve teaching efficiency.For the past year I was selected by Hanban and went to the UK as a volunteer mandarin teacher.Learning Chinese is getting more and more popular in the UK.More and more universities offer Chinese courses.My teaching task is to teach the non-credit Chinese classes in the university.In my class,most students learn Chinese is out of interest.Facing the current situation of Chinese teaching in the UK,how to find a effective teaching model that is suitable for British learners is a research topic with practical significance.This article takes the students I teach in De Montford University as the research object.Firstly,it analyzes the teaching situation comprehensively and discusses whether it has the feasibility of the CBI theme-based pattern.Secondly,this teaching pattern was taken into practice through one semeter;after the teaching practice of the three themes,then evaluations was taken from the aspects of language elements,cultural content,learning strategies and learning emotions.The evaluation results show that the teaching model is generally helpful to students.It helps to improve listening,speaking and reading,but the mastery of Chinese characters and writing is not ideal;most students prefer the teaching mode subjectively,and believe that the authentic language material provided by the teacher can play a great role in the future when they go to China.In the end,based on the results of the assessment,the article gives the advantages and potential problems of implementing the teaching model,and put forward some feasible suggestions.I hope that this teaching practice will provide a feasible idea for Chinese teaching in the UK,and also provide some useful lessons for Chinese teaching in other countries.
