"Androgyny" In Robert Mapplethorpe’s Body Photography

The term "Androgyny" was first proposed by Virginia Woolf,a 19th-century British feminist pioneer writer.Virginia Woolf was keenly aware of the irrationality of patriarchy in his book "A Room of One’s Own".this book exposes the dilemma in women’s writing.Woolf believes that writers can only create good literary works if they reach the state of both sexes.The proposal of Androgyny plays a positive role in deconstructing the gender temperament,challenging the heterosexual system norms,breaking through the dual gender opposition,and achieving harmonious coexistence between men and women.Robert Mapplethorpe is a great American photography artist of the 20 th century.He was a pioneer in social expression and gender issues at the time.This thesis mainly focuses on the photographs of Robert Mapplethorpe.Robert Mapplethorpe expressed the concept of Androgyny in body photography,expressing the oppression and struggle of marginalized groups under Heterosexual Patriarchy.His photographic works resisted the Binary opposition social tradition and broke through social taboos.This article explores the representation of the bisexual homosexuality in the body photography of Robert Mapplethorpe.,which is divided into three parts: the introduction,text three chapters,conclusions,schedules.The first part introduces the origin and significance of the topic,the research status and literature review,research content and research methods;The second part is the interpretation of the theory of "Androgyny" in various fields.The embodiment of androgyny in the fields of mythology,medicine,psychoanalysis,and feminism;The third part explores the gender identity of the Androgyny of Mapplethorpe.In the context of the queer movement,the rise of the LGBT community and the weakening of religious power,Mapplethorpe had the opportunity to recognize himself that the bisexuality ofMapplethorpe was reflected in his bisexual homosexuality and S/M;The fourth part is about the "Androgyny" in the works of Mapplethorpe.This part is divided into three aspects: Clothing,Nude models,and Self-portraits.Robert Mapplethorpe’s work involves gender performance,gender construction,self and other,and his self-portrait involves self-identity construction and other people’s eye resistance.Mapplethorpe photographed a mixture of masculinity and femininity to express "Androgyny".Mapplethorpe seeks to integrate males and females in gender,breaking the dual division of gender and gender,as well as homosexuality and heterosexuality,whites and blacks,and other obvious binary opposition.
