Recent years have witnessed the booming of China’s children’s fiction as well as the increasingly number of English-Chinese translation works of foreign children’s fiction.Children,as a special age group,differ from adults in many aspects like comprehension levels and thinking modes.Therefore,much attention should be paid to their responses to translation works.Under the guidance of readers’ response theory and on the basis of the 2018 Newbery Medal winner Hello,Universe,this thesis discusses specific E-C translation strategies for children’s fiction.Readers’ response theory was put forward by Eugene Nida on the basis of functional equivalence.From the perspective of Nida,we should try to help source-text readers and target-text readers achieve similar or same reading experiences instead of rigid formal equivalence,which means that we should take styles,cultural connotations,and many other aspects into consideration to achieve the reproduction of the source text according to readers’responses.Readers,response theory plays a guiding role in narrowing the differences behind literal meanings as well as achieving the real equivalence between the source text and the target text.This thesis reviews the development of children’s fiction translation and readers’response theory as well as tries to help“children-orientation”into full application.With the help of this theory,the translator gives first priority to readers and sums up specific and feasible translation strategies like amplification,omission,and division in terms of character depictions and setting descriptions in this fiction.
