Grammar teaching is the most controversial topic in the field of foreign language teaching at home and abroad.The focus of the debate is whether or not to teach grammar and how to teach grammar.With the emergence of a large number of research results on grammar teaching,people realize that the focus of the debate is how to teach effectively.Grammar is one of the three main elements of language,which means grammar teaching is an important part of language teaching.In China,how to teach grammar effectively has always been a difficult problem for many teachers.The compulsory Education English Curriculum Standard(2011 Edition)puts forward the requirement of grammar teaching for English teachers.Teachers should change the traditional grammar teaching ways and pay more attention to cultivating students’ competence in using language in the English teaching.However,there are still many teachers don’t update their traditional teaching ways or have the wrong idea what the curriculum standard really means,so the effect of grammar teaching is not good.This can not meet the requirements of curriculum standards,and can not achieve the ultimate goal of English learning which is able to communicate in English.Textbooks are important tools to realize the goal of English curriculum.The English textbooks for junior high school are published by Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press(FLTRP),which is a set of textbooks developed for Chinese students.The author finds that few researchers analyze the situation of grammar teaching in combination with specific versions of textbooks.Therefore,this study aims to analyze the current situation of grammar teaching with three questions by using the text analysis method,questionnaire method,interview method,classroom observation method and test method:(1)What is the current situation of English grammar teaching in junior high schools ?(2)What problems do teachers and students have when they implement grammar teaching and grammar learning ?(3)What effective measures can be put forward to solve the problems existing in English grammar teaching in junior high school?The investigation shows that there are still many problems in the current English grammar teaching in junior high school.Most teachers and students agree with the English textbooks,but they also think the arrangement of grammar points are difficult;some teachersneglect the grammar teaching in English teaching;many teachers can’t use the textbooks flexibly;the context created by the teacher does not match the actual life of the students;the teaching methods and teaching aids are quite unitary;many students’ method of learning grammar is improper;most students aren’t interested in learning grammar;students’ understanding of the purpose of grammar learning is not comprehensive enough;students’ awareness of independent learning is weak and grammar sensitivity is low.This paper puts forward some improvement measures for the English teachers of junior high schools to solve the existing problems in the grammar teaching based on the curriculum standard,theoretical basis and teaching principle.They are as follows: teachers should set up a correct view of grammar and grammar teaching;teachers should use the English textbooks flexibly in combination with the practical needs of teaching;teachers need to contact the actual life of the students and create a real context;teachers need to follow the rules of language learning and respect the development of the students’ cognitive ability;teachers should enrich the aids and methods of grammar teaching;teachers need to improve classroom interest and provide enough comprehensible input for students;and teachers need to improve their professional level.
