| This report is based on a translation practice. The source text of the project is Chapters 32 to 39 of The Americanization of Edward Bok which is an autobiography written by Edward Bok,with a total of 23724 words. These chapters are mainly about how the hero of this autobiography Bok,as an editor of The Ladies’ Home Journal, increased the circulation of publication during wartime, and also narrate that Bok finally ended his editorial career and gave his various reflections after retirement from the editorship. The original language is full of interest, wisdom and inspiration,so we should pay special attention to the expression of the mood in translation. In the process of translation, the author finds that adverbs ending in “ly” appear frequently in this text, and the meaning of the original text can be often accurately understood, but it takes a lot of trouble to translate them into the corresponding Chinese vocabularies. The reason for this is that there are differences between English and Chinese, and the meanings and parts of speech of adverbs ending in “ly” in English do not correspond to those in Chinese. So it is necessary to change the meanings and parts of speech in the process of translation. As adverbs, they are modifiers, modifying verbs,or adjectives, sometimes even modifying the whole sentence. If they are not properly handled, the original style and mood cannot be conveyed in the process of translation, which can easily have a negative effect on the readers’ understanding. In order to solve this problem, based on the translation practice of Chapters 32 to 39 of The Americanization of Edward Bok and directing at the characteristics of adverbs ending in “ly”,this paper will discuss the translation methods of adverbs ending in “ly”,so as to improve translation quality and provide reference for future translation practices. This report is divided into four chapters. The first chapter gives an overview of the task, mainly introducing the task background and the task significance.Chapter two is the task process, including pre-translationpreparation,translation process and post-translation proofreading.Chapter three is case analysis, introducing the definition, classification, characteristics, position of adverbs ending in “ly” and translation methods of adverbs ending in “ly”.The translation methods mainly include sequential translation, adjustment of word order and conversion of parts of speech.Chapter Four is the conclusion which summarizes the experience and lesson gained in the process of translation practice as well as the shortcomings,so as to avoid making similar mistakes in the future translation practices. |
