Phonics is a teaching model. It teaches students the relationship between letters and letter sounds which students apply to reading and spelling. At the beginning of English learning, children must be helped through a voice processing strategy in order to achieve productive reading and spelling.Domestic and overseas scholars have completed a great deal of research related to phonics. However, only results and conclusions drawn from authentic teaching environments can be applied and promoted to real teaching. The author compared and applied the domestic and overseas theories and practical research results in order to design and produce a practical phonics micro-course.The design of this course would include making an effective teaching schedule, designing and collating teaching contents and drawing up an overview of teaching processes and strategies. The research on the teaching practices of the phonics micro-course was carried out in a school with a large number of left-behind children and students with a family economic condition in the lower level. The research employs the action research and experiment research methods,as well as questionnaire and interview methods. The tests and questionnaire results were collected and analyzed in order to examine the impact of the phonics micro-course on third grade second semester students’ interest in learning English as well as on their English reading and spelling ability.Meanwhile, the applicable teaching strategies of phonics micro-course were also studied. It was found that the phonics micro-course can improve third grade second semester students’ interest in learning English. It was also evident that the phonics mico-conrse effectively improved third grade second semester students1 English ability with regards to reading and spelling.Although the phonics micro-course can improve students understanding of words meanings and efficiency in memorizing word meanings,it shows no obvious advantage compared with normal teaching courses, however students commented that they had a positive experience with it.The results from the questionnaires and interviews reveal that when micro-course is applied to real teaching close attention should be paid to the difficulty level of learning contents, how the teaching content is adapted to teaching subject and the variation of teaching activities to benefit different students’ learning needs. The phonics micro-course made a positive impact on students’ English learning and should be developed and put into action on a large scale. Its success can be seen as a good reference for real teaching. The teaching of the phonics micro-course showed that,it is more efficient to employ the systematic and synthetic phonics teaching approach as well as the order of the 42 phonemes from Lloyd’s research. Moreover it became evident through teaching the micro-course that the learning content should change incrementally from easy to difficult according to the needs of the students. It was also clear that the classes should be lively and interesting. Finally, students only need to focus on the learning and application of phonemes and reading or spelling rules in phonics courses after they have gained a good understanding of letter name, letter writing, and basic common words and expressions.
