A Report On C-E Translation Of Higher Education Internationalization In Thailand:Situation,Issues And Countermeasures From The Perspective Of The Skopos Theory

The source text of this report is Higher Education Internationalization in Thailand: Situation,Issues and Countermeasures.It is an academic work on higher education internationalization.The report writer was commissioned by Linguist Translation Services(China)to translate the first and the second sections of chapter one of the source text.This part defines the concept of higher education internationalization,including an overview of the research on it at home and abroad.And this part introduces the general situation of it in China and Thailand respectively.The main difficulties of this translation practice are the translation of Chinese no-subject sentence and the Chinese run-on sentence.The purpose of this report is to summarize the experience of selecting appropriate translation methods based on the skopos theory to translate these two types of Chinese sentence patterns.Chinese and English belong to different language families.Chinese is a paratactic language and English is a hypotactic language.Chinese no-subject sentence and Chinese run-on sentence are typical paratactic sentence patterns.The translation of the two sentence patterns is difficult because of the differences between these two languages.Case analysis shows that the skopos theory has guiding significance in translating the Chinese run-on sentence and Chinese no-subject sentence.The skopos theory regards translation as a kind of behavior related to the translation skopos.And the translation behavior needs to abide by the three basic rules: the skopos rule,the coherence rule,and the fidelity rule.The theoretical framework and the three basic rules of skopos theory guides the translation of Chinese run-on sentence and Chinese no-subject sentence in this translation practice.They also provide rules of solving translation difficulties and basis for choosing translation methods for this practice.The translation practice finds that the target readers and the client’s requirements are important factors that determine the translation skopos.In translating Chinese run-on sentence,methods such as,division,reconstruction and combination,can be adopted to adjust the sentence order.In translating Chinese no-subject sentence,the formal subject “it” can be utilized to substitute the subject of the source text.The amplification can be adopted to supplement the subject according to the context.And the passive voice can be utilized to omit the subject.
