This is a translation practice report,and the original text of the project is Educated A Memoir by Tara Westover,an American memoir writer.The author tells the story of how she tried to reconcile her desire for education and autonomy with the rigorous ideology of her family.In addition,the book takes education as its theme which is a concern to the people in contemporary society.The Chinese translation practice is to help readers of the target language with a full understanding of original works and in particular a full sharing of a storyline and characters psychologically and semantically.Just it is this in the source text: how to escape from the confinement brought by the family of origin and redeem ourselves step by step through education.Memoir is a literary form of recalling personal experiences and social activities.It is generally authentic,vivid and contemporary.How to truly maintain the original author’s memory intact is the focus and difficulty of this task.In the translation of memoir literary works with relatively rare themes such as Educated A Memoir,it is particularly necessary to deepen the analysis of the context of the source text so that the translation will not deviate from the content of the source language works and the ideological connotation of the works.Peter Newmark,a famous British translator,proposed semantic translation and communicative translation.In recent years,scholars at home and abroad have concluded that semantic translation theory is more suitable for guiding lexical levels of translation practice,while communicative translation is more suitable for guiding syntactic levels of translation practice.In view of the linguistic feature of the source text and guided by Peter Newmark,translation methods such as conversion,amplification and inversion are employed.Likewise,an analysis of the problems is done from both lexical and the syntactic level.There are two focuses to be considered.First,what is the language style of memoir fiction? Second,what translation strategies and approaches are appropriately adopted to keep the originality in meaning and in mind.This practice report emphasizes the significant role of semantic translation and communicative translation,which enables translators to have a clearer choice of translation methods and strategies.Since the book has not yet been translated into Chinese,translating the book into Chinese will help to study the characteristics of contemporary memoir novels,show the charm of English language,and raiseawareness of the importance of education.It has a certain literary orientation and social practical significance.
