Ferit Orhan Pamuk is a famous contemporary novelist in Turkey. In 2006,he won the Nobel Prize in Literature for "who in the quest for the melancholic soul of his native city has discovered new symbols for the clash and interlacing of cultures".This thesis takes Pamuk's representative novels as the research object, analyzing the cultural root-seeking consciousness in his novels and exploring the writer's thinking on how Turkey can get out of the modern predicament. This paper is mainly composed of three parts: introduction, body and conclusion. The introduction part mainly includes the following aspects, namely, the life and creation of Pamuk, the research status at home and abroad,as well as the research ideas and the significance of the topic. The main part of the body discusses the cultural root-seeking consciousness in Pamuk's works from four aspects: the origin of cultural root-seeking consciousness,Turkish history,Turkish traditional culture and cultural root-seeking.The first chapter analyzes how does the Istanbul,Pamuk family and Turkish national crisis affect the formation of the writer's cultural root-seeking consciousness. The second chapter analyzes the history of the Ottoman Empire and the Republic of Turkey in novels. The writer reveals the roots of the demise of the Ottoman Empire by recreating the history of the Ottoman Empire from prosperity to destruction. At the same time,in the novels,it reproduces the difficulties in the history of Turkey's modern development and expresses a strong sense of urgency. The third chapter analyzes the two cultural elements of Pamuk's works, and explores the spiritual connotation and historical significance of Turkish traditional culture. The fourth chapter discusses the direction of Pamuk's cultural root-seeking.The writer reveals his own modern reflection on national culture and the intention of revitalizing Turkish culture in the collision of Eastern and Western culture.Since the Ottoman Empire disintegrated and the Republic was established, the conflict between Turkey and Western culture at the junction of Europe and Asia has been long-standing.After entering the modern society, the Turkish native culture has presented a state of confusion in the face of the hegemony of Western mainstream culture. The Turks tried to imitate the Western culture to change the disadvantaged position of the local culture. It is in this cultural context that Pamuk expressed a distinct cultural root-seeking consciousness in his creations. He tried to find outstanding national culture from the Ottoman culture of more than700 years to show the uniqueness of Turkish culture. In addition,he expressed his own cultural ideals, that is,to find the fusion point between the East and the West, and promote the harmonious coexistence between Turkish culture and Western culture.Pamuk's reflections oncultural conflicts, national infighting, and economic crisis also reflect his concern for the current cultural predicament of mankind.Global culture presents a diversified trend in communication. How to inherit and develop its own culture under the impact of foreign culture is a question that all ethnic groups need to think about.Pamuk's novels fully demonstrate his humanistic care and social responsibility.
