A Report On Translation Of Juniper,Gentian And Rosemary(Excerpts)

It is generally acknowledged that the dialogues represent the most appealing and expressive part in novels with the characteristics of communication and culture.As the dialogues are closely related to the context,and the dialogues illustrate various contexts by means of shaping characters,promoting plot and expressing social culture,it appears a possibility to translate the dialogues in novels in accordance with contextual correlates.The Theory of Adaptation,put forward by a Belgian linguist named Verschueren,views that the use of language is a process of making pragmatic choices in language.The correlates of language rely on the context,in other words,the contextual correlates of adaptability remain important factors in choices of the language use.This report chose a fantasy fiction Juniper Gentian and Rosemary written by an American writer Pamela Dean as the object of translation program thanks to its fascinating dialogues,which provides practical significance of dialogues translation in this novel.Having selected some typical cases from Juniper,Gentian and Rosemary,this report analyzed the choices and adaptation made by the translator from the perspective of communicative context including the mental world,the social world and the physical world,and linguistic context including contextual cohesion,intertextuality and sequencing based on the division of context by Verschueren.It shows a crucial significance to translate the dialogues in novels according to contextual correlates of adaptability.From the perspective of literariness,correlated with the communicative context and the linguistic context,the dialogues can help translation achieve a better communication result so as to convey the original meaning of author,as well as seek out the pith and connotation,reshape characters and promote plot.From the aspect of translation research,the combination of contextual correlates of adaptability and dialogues translation not only offers a new view to refine the translation of literature,but also provides a better way for the translator to improve the translation quality and consider overall context at the same time in time.It also furnishes certain reference for the novel translation practice in the future.
