Teacher feedback is an indispensable part of classroom communication.More and more research show that teacher feedback plays a vital role in students’ learning.For one thing,teacher feedback provides students with important information about their learning situation,which can help students to find out their problems during their own learning process so that they can actively solve these problems;for another thing,teacher feedback also has an impact on students’ emotions,which in turn can affect students’participation in classroom.Students’ participation in classroom is directly related to their learning efficiency and learning outcomes.There are many studies on teacher feedback at home and abroad,while studies on effects of teacher feedback on students’ participation are few.This paper sorts out the existing research and theoretical basis of teacher feedback and students’ classroom participation at first.Then effects of teacher feedback on students’ classroom participation are selected to have deep explorations.The subjects of this research are 145 students and 3 English teachers in an ordinary junior high school in Wuhan.This paper uses questionnaire and interview as the main research instruments to investigate main types of feedback used by teachers in English classes and students’preference to teacher feedback.At the same time,effects of teacher feedback on students’classroom participation will be explored in this paper.Based on questionnaire and interview,the following questions are expected to be answered in this research:(1)What are the main types and frequency of feedback used by teachers in junior high school English classes?(2)What kinds of teacher feedback are preferred by students?(3)What effects do teacher feedback have on students’ participation in English classes?The research shows that the main type of feedback used by teachers in English classes is simple words feedback and the frequency of teacher feedback is low to some extent.As for students’ preference to teacher feedback,the research shows that students are in favor of eye contact feedback,because this kind of teacher feedback can reduce their anxiety.Concerning the effects of teacher feedback on students’ English class participation,the research finds that teacher feedback can improve students’ motivation and boost their confidence in participating in classroom activities.In addition,there are differences in the effects of teacher feedback on classroom participation of different genders.Teachers’ body language feedback has a greater impact on girls’ classroom participation,while there are no significant differences in the effects of feedback on students’ classroom participation of different grades.
