With the rapid development of our country,a large number of civil disputes have been sparked.Because of its flexibility and convenience,courtroom mediation helps to improve efficiency of dispute resolution.Proper language is the key factor to promote the smooth development of mediation.Among various language choices,person deixis is an important strategy for identity construction.However,from the collected studies,the author finds out that there are few studies which have been conducted to analyze courtroom mediation discourse,identity construction and person deixis in courtroom mediation.Under the guidance of Liao Mezhen9s Goal-driven Principle and based on person deixis used by judges in the courtroom mediation,the author conducts a qualitative study to analyze the judged identities by answering the following three questions.Firstly,what kind of identities the judge constructs in the goal interactions subject to three goal relations?Secondly,during the process,how does judge chooses person deixis?Thirdly,why does judge choose person deixis to construct his identities?It is found that,firstly,the judge uses person deixis to construct institutional identity and discourse identity.The former,decided by the courtroom procedure and judge’s obligation,includes organizer of the courtroom procedure,law mouthpiece,investigator of the facts,inquirer of mediation willingness and referee of the litigants9 mediation possibility in the goal neutral relations,and regulator of procedure in the goal divergent;While the latter encompasses peacemaker and appraiser in goal divergent relation,the supporter of the weak group and persuader in goal convergent relation.Secondly,judge uses courtroom terms,full name terms and person pronouns to construct his institutional identity,whereas uses kinship terms,occupation terms,familiarity terms and person pronouns to construct discourse identity.In the process of identity construction,the person deixis used by judge is to strengthen and weaken the institutional characteristics by adjusting the psychological and social distance between the judge and litigants.Present study focusing on the judge’s identity construction by analyzing person deixis has both theoretical and practical significance.Theoretical speaking,it firstly,can widen the research of person deixis and deepen the identity construction;secondly,because it applies the pragmatic theory to the research on forensic language,present study is conducive to the development of both pragmatics and forensic linguistics;thirdly,there exist some similarities between the courtroom discourse and the daily language,therefore,this study provides a new view for researches on daily language.Practically speaking,firstly,this study is based on courtroom discourse,therefore,it has reference value for the standardization of courtroom mediation discourse;secondly,present study is conducted to analyze courtroom mediation discourse which is to analyze the interpersonal relation between the litigants,hence it is helpful for establishing friendly interpersonal relationship and maintain the harmony of the society.
