A Report On A Medical Interpreting Project:the Child Rehabilitation Training Program Of The Children Of China Pediatrics Foundation

The Children of China Pediatrics Foundation(CCPF)is dedicated to the health of orphaned and disabled children in China.From April 13 to 20,2018,CCPF returned to Nanjing again.While treating orphaned and disabled children,it also carried out a 5-day rehabilitation and nursing training for nurses and caregivers of Nanjing children’s welfare institute.The reporter provided medical on-site interpretation and classroom interpretating services for this public benefit activity.In the process of interpretation,the reporter encountered two types of issues,from the perspective of the interpretation level and beyond.The former referred to lacking of terminology,including cognitive knowledge,terminology and professional abbreviations.The latter were related to the confusion about multiple roles expectation;confusion about the degree of intervention and improper treatment with children patients.The reporter proposed solutions by analyzing and reflecting on the real corpus,drawing on the experience of excellent interpreters and relevant research results.In terms of interpreting skills,interpreters should communicate with professionals in the field,accumulate project related terminologies and establish bilingual corpus.Furthermore,beyond the aspect of interpreting skills,interpreters should give full play to the translator’s subjective initiative under the guidance of the translator’s subjectivity theory,play the role of moderator in the communication process appropriately,and fully understand the way of communication with children.The report aims to explore better translation strategies for medical interpretation,help interpreters give full play to their subjectivity,and deal with emergencies more efficiently under the guidance of correct translation concepts.
