| As a significant element of language,vocabulary plays a key role in communication.Students’ vocabulary and their proficiency in application have a direct effect on language communication.However,how to use the words freely puzzles many senior high school students.Moreover,teachers become more aware of various shortcomings of the current vocabulary teaching method.Contexts promote learners to understand the meanings,tell distinctions between words and grasp the allocations.Conducting context-based English vocabulary teaching method(hereafter referred to as CB English vocabulary teaching)in senior high school,this study attempts to improve students’ ability to guess the meaning of words and use these words,as well as arouse students’ enthusiasm in learning.Based on the context theory,this study took two Grade 1 classes in senior high as the research objects.After a survey on the students’ current vocabulary learning strategies,a relevant experiment was designed.The author applied different vocabulary teaching methods to the experimental and controlled classes.To make it clear,the teaching cases of the traditional vocabulary class and the context-based vocabulary class were presented.Both pre-tests and post-tests were conducted to assess the effectiveness of CB English vocabulary teaching method.After analyzing the results,the author drew the following conclusions:1)CB English vocabulary teaching can improve students’ vocabulary competence.2)CB English vocabulary teaching can also improve the students’ English final exam test scores.3)CB English vocabulary teaching can not only stimulate students’ interest in learning,but also optimize students’ vocabulary learning strategies.On account of the constraints of subjective and objective factors,this study has certain limitations.Fortunately,this empirical study provides the author with positive implications.Context-based English vocabulary teaching is an effective approach as the students in the experimental class have made better progress in vocabulary learning.As for the students who are below average,it is necessary to encourage them to learn in contexts step by step.Therefore,the author suggests the following studies laying emphasis on how to set proper contexts to facilitate the acquisition of new words. |
