English teaching focuses on its language knowledge and skills.It is one of the important goals of English teaching to cultivate students' oral skills under the promotion of quality education.However,it is an indisputable fact that Chinese students are weak in oral English.Retelling strategy is often used in Chinese and English teaching in the lower grades to check students' understanding of the text.As a matter of fact,retelling is a process of realizing the meaning construction of the learned knowledge on the basis of understanding and innovation.It is also a synthesis of the four abilities of understanding,summarizing,memorizing and expressing.It also plays a certain role in promoting the oral English learning in secondary vocational school.Aiming at the current situation of secondary vocational English learning,this research attempts to explore the feasibility and effectiveness of applying retelling strategy to oral English teaching in secondary vocational schools.The research methods used in this study are literature research,investigation,quantitative and qualitative analysis.The subjects of the experiment are 81 students from two parallel classes of grade two in a secondary vocational school in Jiangsu province.39 subjects are in the controlled class(Class 14,Grade 2),and 42 subjects are in the experimental class(Class 18,Grade 2).The experiment period is 30 weeks,and the data are analyzed after the experiment.The pre-test results show that there is no significant difference between the two classes in the level of oral English.During the experiment,the two classes were taught in the same way,but the experimental class was given the task of retelling after learning.The results of the interviews with the students show that the retelling of the sample essay is beneficial to improving the students' oral English.The questionnaire survey and the post-test results also show that the performance of the experimental class after the retelling training is better than that of the control class,and the average scores of the two groups are significantly different in statistical significance.
