The translation project is selected from Translation Changes Everything: Theory and Practice written by Lawrence Venuti. This book is a kind of paper collection of translation studies characterized by professional vocabulary, complicated sentence pattern and rigorous language, which consists of fourteen academic papers on translation studies published by the author since 2000.There are fourteen chapters in the book, and this translation practice is Chapter One “Translation, community, utopia”.According to the text type theory put forward by Peter Newmark, this book can be classified as informative text with a small part of expressive text.As the text intends to convey information and facts,it is necessary to be faithful to the original text and consider readers' acceptability during translation. Therefore, this translation project adopts Nida's Functional Equivalence Theory and communicative translation as the main strategy and semantic translation as the supplementary one.Case analysis and specific translation techniques are discussed at lexical, syntactic, cultural and stylistic levels to achieve the effect of functional equivalence. At last, this translation report concludes by discussing problems and gains from this translation practice, which is conducive to making the translator have a clearer and deeper understanding of the essence of translation, improve translation skills and lay a solid foundation for future translation practice.
