For a long time, the dialect has been a precious and creative element for writers at home and abroad. It deepens the emotions of the characters in writing with rich cultural backgrounds, and adds vividness to the image-shaping.Dialects can be categorized into regional dialects, social dialects and individual dialects according to their characters.Due to the uniqueness of dialects,it is not easy to accurately convey the contents and emotions contained in them during translation. Therefore, the dialect translation is very difficult.Translators at home and abroad also have different opinions about dialect translation. This thesis, based on the previous translation studies of dialects at home and abroad, conducts a research on Zhang Guruo's translation of Tess of the D'Urbervilles as an example.Under the framework of reception aesthetics, involving the reader-centered theory, the expectation horizon and the text reception, the thesis discusses dialect translation art from three aspects: regional dialects, social dialects and personal dialects. It interprets the readers' reception psychology, focuses on the factors such as dialect wording, speech and tone of characters in different situations, and analyzes the characters' status, education level and images reflected in the translation, which explains the translation art of dialects.Through the research, this thesis finds that for the translation of regional dialects, the translator Zhang Guruo mainly adopts translation tactics of literal translation plus annotation. For the translation of social dialects, the translator uses mistranslation and malapropism to depict a character. And he adopts corresponding crude words and colloquial translation to interpret personal dialects. In the process of translating a novel,a translator should keep the aesthetics of original text as soon as possible,so that the target readers can have the aesthetic feelings similar to those of the original readers. In brief, this thesis demonstrates the guiding role of reception aesthetics theory in dialect translation. It deepens the theoretical research of dialect translation and enriches the research content. Moreover,it is advocated that when translating dialects, translators should fully understand the original text and the author's intention, and pay more attention to the readers' expectation and acceptance,so as to adopt appropriate translation methods to convey the aesthetic feeling of the original text.In addition, the research also provides a good reference for the translation practice of dialects.
