Drama translation studies have made great progress in recent decades. However,as the research moves along, the development of drama translation has shown some misunderstandings on methodology and epistemology.Methodologically, the translation field is trapped in the empiricism,over-emphasizing the translator's translation strategies and focusing on single-dimensional transfer of the language level to realize the equivalence of the original. In terms of epistemology, the translation circles still hold the standpoint of binary-opposition and the centerism.Nevertheless, translation is an open communication. The translator produces translation through a dynamic dialogue with the author, the reader, the source culture and the target culture of the text, and thereby it achieves the afterlife of the text. Thus, translation process can be regarded as a polyphony dialogue involving a variety of factors. This happens to coincide with Bakhtin's thoughts of Dialogism. This study views translation from the perspective of Dialogism, which will break the limitations of previous translation studies and gain more clarified and deeper understanding of translation process. This thesis applies Bakhtin's Dialogism as the theoretical guide to the study of the Chinese translation of An Ideal Husband and explores dynamic polyphony dialogue phenomena in Yu Guangzhong's translating of An Ideal Husband, analyzing the dialogicality of multiple agents, contexts, ethics and scales. It also seeks dialogue relationships formed by these diverse factors, their guidance for translation process as well as influences towards translation result. This thesis conducts a discourseanalysis of translation process, making the dialogue spirit run through the whole paper. It finds double-voices(the dialogue form and dialogue nature of the discourse in the work)out from the translated text. Thus,it helps the translator shape a holistic view for translation and makes the translated text become more suitable for readers' reading appreciation and live performance.Through several case studies and theoretical researches, the major findings are as follows.Firstly, the translator can understand the independence and intrinsic freedom of the work's voice via fitting in the dialogue of agents to reproduce the artistic appearance and the essence of discourse.Secondly, translators are able to activate matched context characteristics on translation expression and build a bridge for dialogue between different contexts based on the analysis of understanding the original's contexts, then grasp the background of the story.Thirdly, translators negotiate and dialogue with different ethics to make the translation accord with professional standards and enhances the cross-culture propagation of the drama.Lastly, translators construct a macro-dialogue for social relations and a micro-dialogue for role relationships, depicting characters and social reality in the translation in order to help readers comprehend author's emotional attitudes.Through a comprehensive consideration of dialogue agents, contexts, ethics and scales, the study reveals the application value of Dialogism to drama translation. It applies to an in-depth analysis of drama translation from multiple-dimensions and provides a new viewpoint and reference for future drama translation studies and drama translation criticism.
