Axonometric mapping method is simple and convenient, which can show the integrity of building space and its internal structure. Therefore,it is widely used in architectural design and industrial design. The traditional Chinese painting is similar to the axonometric method in expressing houses, carriages, horses and furniture, but it is called "positive parallel method" in ancient Chinese traditional painting. The author believes that the axonometric method, named only in the 16 th century, and it is is more inclusive than the "positive parallel method".Therefore, the term "axonometric mapping" in this paper is borrowed from architectural design. In the 15 th century, perspective had developed vigorously in Italy.Since then, the focus perspective has been deeply rooted in the hearts of the people.Under the influence of Western culture, the perception of traditional painting space has been challenged. In the field of painting, artists are also actively exploring the space modeling method in line with modern visual language. As a special method of spatial representation of traditional Chinese painting, axonometric mapping can not only effectively solve the problem of spatial representation of pictures, but also reflect the traditional Chinese aesthetic ideas. However,it has been diluted or even denied after the focus perspective prevailed. In this innovative era, contemporary Chinese painting still needs to find and follow its cultural roots and national characteristics. Therefore,it is necessary to continue to inherit and develop traditional aesthetic ideas.Based on such creative needs, the author mainly uses the method of iconography to study the application of axonometric mapping in Tang and Song paintings from the following three aspects:Firstly, from the two levels of China and the West, along the development of axonometric mapping in architectural design, this paper briefly combs the historical evolution and evolution of axonometric mapping in traditional Chinese painting, and then finds that the emergence of axonometric mapping in both East and West is for practical purposes.Secondly, taking the paintings of Tang and Song Dynasties as examples, the specific application of axonometric mapping in painting is analyzed. When it is used as a perspective method,it can not only retain the real shape of the object, but also display the spatial structure of the object to the greatest extent. When it is used as a composition element,it presents three kinds of composition patterns: the central axis tilt, the front parallel and the side parallel, that different composition presents different visual effects. Finally, through the analysis of paintings in Tang and Song Dynasties, this paper explores the spatial characteristics of axonometric mapping in painting. As a perspective method, axonometric mapping can better show the overall situation and authenticity of things than focus perspective because of its bird’s-eye view and vanishing points;as a composition element, the stage layout presented by axonometric mapping can convey mysterious spatial sense, and its inclined parallel extension line can express moving picture trajectory and moving past. The process of motion changes the position of space, and the change of space produces time.Through analysis and discussion, axonometric mapping method is concluded that axonometric drawing is not only a perspective method to express the real three-dimensional space, but also a composition element to construct two-dimensional pictures. Its spatial connotation reflects the traditional aesthetic experience of the Chinese people, and it reflects the space-time view and aesthetic appreciation of traditional Chinese painting, which can not only re-examine the traditional aesthetic experience of the Chinese painters.Providing a new perspective can also bring new inspiration for painting creation.
