The Research Of Polysyllabic Words In The New Five Dynasty History

The New Five Dynasty History,written by Xiu Ouyang in the Northern Song Dynasty of ancient China,reflected the language appearance of early modern Chinese language and has great value on linguistic research.In linguistic aspect,We studied the polysyllabic words in The New Five Dynasty History mainly from the following four parts:Firstly,the new words and new meanings of old words seen in The New Five Dynasty History history.Specifically,the words and meanings formed in the period of Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms to Northern Song Dynasty and haven’t been seen in the previous documents.We analyzed the new words and new meanings’ grammar structure and semantic structure,probing how they formed exhaustively.We found that these new words and new meanings mainly include nouns,verbs and adjectives,most of which are coordinate compounds and modifying compounds,what’s more,most new words formed by morpheme combination,some new words formed by phrase abbreviation,new meanings mainly formed by morpheme meaning extension,grammar structure transformation and old word meaning extension.Secondly,the comparison of common synonyms seen in The New Five Dynasty History and used in contemporary Chinese language.We found that some of them are ancient-modern words that formed before or after Northern Song Dynasty,some of them are synonyms that have been used simultaneously in Northern Song Dynasty.In the meanwhile,we probed the reason why the word seen in The New Five Dynasty History disappeared and the word used in contemporary Chinese language reserved.Thirdly,we studied the words seen in The New Five Dynasty History and also reserved in contemporary Chinese language by comparing their meaning of different period.We analyzed the reservation and development of the meanings seen in The New Five Dynasty History as well as the increased meanings and decreased meanings of the words seen in The New Five Dynasty History,probing the reason of the development of meanings as well.Fourthly,we listed some words,meanings and sentences seen in The New Five Dynasty History that can be used to supplement the Great Chinese Dictionary.
