Tang Geng, with the secondary personal name of Zi Xi,was born in Danling County,Meizhou(known as Danling County,Sichuan Province by now)and a poet lived in the Song dynasty. He was honored as Little Dongpo because of his respect to Su Shi for all his life, and he shared the same hometown with Su Shi and they were both demoted to Huizhou as well.He successively worked at Sichuan and the capital city, with the nature of diligent and modest,he was always unsuccessful. In the middle age,he was demoted to Huizhou due to the implication of Zhang Shangying, and he was allowed to come back to the capital when he was 51 years old after 5 lean years. Before the demotion to Huizhou,Tang Geng was a young official with the faith of administering a country and monarch loyalty with pity on people, and he positively participated in politics with a critical eye;after the demotion to Huizhou,he became an old guilty official with great burden in his heart, and his enthusiasm in participating in politics was eliminated by conflict between parties, however he just couldn't get rid of the faith of saving the nation determined since his childhood.Tang Geng's life was turned upside down after the demotion to Huizhou, and his poetic creation also presented two stages with different features. In terms of subject, the range of subjects of later poems was increased or decreased, with lots of scenery poems and poems of missing relatives;in the selection of subject, the poet distinctly moved his eyes onto landscapes and introspection. The poems created in later stage looks more neat and orderly through a large number of exercises, and the later poems possess the feature of gloomy and sparse but graceful, compared to the passionate poems in early stage. At the same time we shall notice that, the poems created both in the early and later stage are really connected with each other, regardless of some big differences.Tang Geng was born in a family with thick atmosphere of Confucianism,so his belief in Confucianism ran throughout his life.In his poems,he insisted a spirit of criticism as a Confucian scholar;however, this trend turned to be recessive in the later stage due to the force of politics. On the whole, the achievement of his poetry art in later stage is much higher than that of early stage, which is the jewel of his poetic art.It is this unlucky demotion that creates this famous poet in the history of poem in Song dynasty.
