With rapid development in economy,China has attracted more and more foreigners for working, studying or traveling. The Chinese-English translation of public signs has shown its increasing importance and necessity. This thesis is a tentative research on C-E translation strategies and methods of public signs in the frame of reference to Eco-translatology,taking the translation of Xi’an urban rail transit public signs as a case. The thesis firstly reviews the definition, features, functions, classification and research status of public sign;then, takes Eco-translatology as theoretical framework and interprets its core concepts, including the translator’s role, translation principle, method and process as well as evaluation standard;lastly, the thesis analyzes the translation of Xi’an urban rail transit public signs and explores translation strategies and methods of public signs from three stages, namely adaptation, selection and transformation as well as evaluation, under the guidance of Eco-translatology.The research finds that Eco-tranlatology can be applied to guide C-E translation of public signs based on the principle of“multi-dimensional” adaptation and selection, and that translators need to adapt to features, laws and rules, target readers and other translational eco-environments of public signs before translating, make adaptive selection and transformation in linguistic, cultural and communicative dimensions during translating, and conduct a comprehensive evaluation to translation from “multi-dimensional” adaptation and selection, the translator’s quality and readers’ feedback after translating.Translation methods of public signs in the frame of Eco-translatology are summarized as borrowing, imitation, reversion and omission.
