Disfluency In English-Chinese Consecutive Interpretation And Coping Strategies

Fluency is one of the most important criteria for judging the quality of interpretation.Disfluency in interpreting will not only affect the delivery of information,but also may decrease audiences’ faith in the interpreter.Therefore,every interpreter should work on improving interpreting fluency.Through literature research and case analysis,this paper defines and summarizes the disfluency phenomenon in interpretation,and classify disfluency phenomena as improper suspension,repetition and self-correction.After analyzing the causes of disfluency,the author gives three solutions: improve short-term memory,strengthen self-monitoring and create corpus.The author hopes that this paper can serve as a useful case for interpretation practice and teaching,provide practical methods in improving the quality of interpretation,and bring inspiration to interpreters and related practitioners.
