John Ronald Riel Tolkien’s "The Lord of the Rings" is a masterpiece in the history of contemporary fantasy fiction. The Elven family that was created is considered by the author himself to be the most satisfied and proud character in the entire "Lord of the Rings" series. At the same time,Elves are considered to be one of the most successful images in the fantasy literary world because of their distinctive image characteristics and complete history and cultural system. With the great heat of the novel "The Lord of the Rings" in the world, the research on it in China has begun to take shape, and the research angle shows a trend of diversified development. However,as far as the study of the characters in the works is concerned, there is a lack of overall and systematic thinking, and the study of the elf image is a field that is rarely involved. This article tries to start from the image of the elf in the novel "The Lord of the Rings".Through the careful reading of the text, the theory of character analysis and related theories are adopted, and the distinctive character image of the elf in the novel is the center. From the four parts of "Lord of the Rings",the fairy world, the fairy image, the fairy origin, and the narrative function and realistic significance of the elf image are systematically analyzed in order to provide new materials for the study of the character image and provide new research for the "Lord of the Rings" series of novels.perspective.This paper consists of three parts: introduction, text and conclusion. In the introduction, the author will briefly introduce Tolkien and his works, and summarize the status of the research on the text of the Lord of the Rings at home and abroad, and then get the significance of this study. The body part consists of four chapters. The first chapter first selects two places where the elf family lives in the "Lord of the Rings" works to display the typical elf Wangguoluosiluo and Rivendell. These two distinctive elf worlds are the residences of two different ethnic elves, which provide powerful comments on the different elf images.Based on the text, the second chapter analyzes the representative images of the three elves in the works of The Lord of the Rings-Kailancuier,Elrond,and Legolas.By summarizing the characteristics of different elf images in the works, they connect the elves in the text. The family has a long history. This reveals the rich connotation of different elf images in the entire work of The Lord of the Rings. The third chapter systematically introduces the origins of theelf image. From the perspective of mythology, religion, folklore, and literature,it is revealed that Tolkien’s creation of the elf image incorporates the ethnic division of Nordic mythology and the characteristics of the elf love of trees in folklore. And the birth of the Christian Elven family is different from the fairy image of the "devil" type in folklore. The elf image in the work of "The Lord of the Rings" is synonymous with elegance and wisdom. In the fourth chapter, the narrative function and practical significance of the elf image in the "Lord of the Rings" series of works, the elf image,as an important character image in the work, promotes the development of the plot at the key point of the development of the story and helps to achieve the coherence of the narrative. At the same time,it increases the realism of the narrative by approximating the mythical self-contained elf image;Viewing the reality, the Elves are detached from the world and are almost shaped by the image of God in Christianity. They express the author’s pursuit of transcending the spiritual realm of reality and the devout Christians ’persistence and waiting for eternal beliefs.
