Thomas Hardy is an outstanding British novelist and poet in the 19 th century.As his most important work,“the novels of character and environment” has been attracting much attention from readers and scholars.In the creation of these novels,hardy paid great attention to the description of the natural environment.He depicted the nature and the people living in it with thick brush,showing the different relations between man and nature,man and society,man and man.As a writer spanning the 19 th and the 20 th century,hardy's works influenced the development of later literature greatly.As a hot topic,ecocriticism got the attention of many scholars.However,there are not many people who interpret hardy's novels from the perspective of ecological criticism.Some of them focus more on the natural ecology of animals and women,but lack the attention to the whole ecology including natural ecology,social ecology and spiritual ecology.Therefore,from the current research situation and research results,we can see that there is much research space and of great value to analyze hardy's novels with the theory of ecological criticism.In this paper,the author mainly analyzes five of hardy's important novels including Tess of the D'Urbervilles,The Return of the Native,The Mayor of Casterbridge,Far from the Madding Crowd,Jude the Obscure from the perspective of ecocriticism,so as to reveal hardy's ecological consciousness and appreciate the unique artistic charm of his novels.The thesis is divided into five parts.The first part is the introduces,which mainly introduce the general situation of research on hardy's novels,clarifies the research value and significance of this paper,put forward the research focus,research ideas and innovation of this paper.The second part traces the origin of hardy's ecological consciousness.Firstly,this paper analyzes hardy's ecological consciousness from social factors such as social change and philosophical trends.Secondly,it further explores the formation of hardy's ecological consciousness from his life experience and other personal factors.The third part discusses and studies the ecological consciousness in hardy's novels.The ecological consciousness in hardy's novels is divided into three levels,namely the distorted natural ecology,the unbalanced spiritual ecology and the alienated social ecology.Through the interpretation,the author reveals the great writer's thinking and understanding of human destiny,and discovers the ecological wisdom in his works.The fourth part analyzes and clarifies the ecological thinking reflected in hardy's novels.Firstly,this paper analyzes the disadvantages brought by industrial civilization to interpret hardy's ecological thinking.Then,it expounds hardy's comprehension from the perspective of the relationship between environment and people on how to harmonize them.The conclusion of the fifth part of the paper summarizes the viewpoints of this paper,emphasizes the cultural value and practical significance of novels from the perspective of ecological criticism.
