Citation is currently receiving much attention.It is the central feature of academic writing.It plays an important part in theses.Appropriate citation practice means the writer acquires citation skills to some degree.With proper citations,the thesis can be much more complete and convincing.Therefore,the present study aims to compare citation practice in literature review section between English journal articles(by western scholars)and Chinese students’ academic writings(by Chinese English-major masters).According to Thompson&Tribble’s(2001)and Hyland’s(1999)citation frameworks,this study compares and contrasts citation practice,with regard to citation density,citation form and author stance,in 25 Chinese masters’ theses and 25 TESOL in the field of applied linguistics.All of them are randomly chosen as research subjects ranging from 2017-2019.And self-built corpus is adopted to analyze the citation practice.The major research questions are as follows:(1)What are the differences and similarities in citation density between Chinese masters’ academic writings and foreign experts’ journal articles of applied linguistics in literature review section?(2)How do Chinese masters’ academic writings of applied linguistics compare with those of foreign experts in terms of citation form in literature review section?(3)How do Chinese masters’ academic writings of applied linguistics compare with those of foreign experts on the basis of author stance in literature review section?The thesis uses Antconc 3.3.0 and MicrosoftWord to retrieve and annotate the text.Then the detailed information about citation practice is analyzed.The findings present that(1)Compared with masters’theses,the citations in experts’ writings are denser.(2)The citation form shows a significant difference between masters’ theses and experts’writings.Chinese students are in favour of using integral citations.However,foreign experts tend to apply non-integral citations.Both students and experts are in favor of verb-controlling and source citations from the sub-categories of integral and non-integral citations.(3)Compared with experts’ journal articles,students in China lack the skill of showing their stances when they write theses.Students should develop the idea of how to cite properly and effectively in theses writing and try their best to enhance their academic citation level.In addition,the results of this thesis are meaningful for academic writing teaching,which inspire teachers a lot.Teachers should appropriately improve the teaching plan in daily academic writing teaching to achieve further improvement in students’ academic writing ability.
