A Study On Han Yu And Liu Zongyuan In Japanese Prose Criticisms

The Classical Prose Movement in Tang dynasty,which was jointly initiated by Han and Liu,has a great influence on the literature history of China and even East Asia.As an important branch of ancient Chinese literary criticism,the Japanese prose criticisms highly revere the articles and historical status of Han Yu and Liu Zongyuan.Taking the Japanese prose criticisms as the research objects,this thesis will sort out the special contents of Han and Liu’s thoughts,grammars,writing styles and other respects.Through comparing the similarities and differences between the Chinese and Japanese literature in acceptance of Han and Liu,we will find an exotic section for the study of ancient Chinese literature.In addition to the introduction and conclusion,this thesis will be divided into three chapters.The first chapter will discuss the historical positions of Han and Liu in Japanese.The historical background of Japanese Literature in Edo period is the first factor to analyze the acceptance of Han and Liu in Japanese prose criticisms.In terms of the content,the historical position of Han and Liu’s "Source of Literature and Dao”(文道之源)in Japanese prose criticisms is expressed by two main lines,namely,the intellectual history and the literature history.The evaluations of Han and Liu in Japanese prose criticisms,including life experiences and achievements,are a clear proof of this concept.The second chapter will analyze the acceptance of Han and Liu’s literary theory in Japanese.It includes the following aspects:Taking ancient literary classics as the origins;Fighting against plagiarism and pursuing higher literary accomplishments;Taking Han and Liu’s proses as examples of grammar explanation.In addition,the selection of Han and Liu’s model writings and the unique textual research by Japanese scholars will be included into this chapter,which serve as a circumstantial evidence of the acceptance of Han and Liu in Japanese.The third chapter will discuss the differences of literary style and achievement between Han and Liu.Their literary style enjoys a good reputation of "Han’s literary style reads like the sea while Liu’s reads like the spring"(韩海柳泉).Besides,Liu’s travel notes about natural scenery are the most representative works of all the literary genres in the Japanese prose criticisms.Finally,the conclusion will be drawn as the summary of thesis.Furthermore,a brief table about the photo-offset copy will be appended.As the writer of this thesis,I sincerely hope it will be beneficial to academics.
