An Introspective Study On Test-takers’ Processes Of Taking The New HSK Band 6 Reading Test

This article uses the introspection method to study the answering process of two types of questions for the eight international students to complete the New HSK Band 6 reading test part of the gapped words task and gapped text task.From the aspects of the type of knowledge used in the answer and the level of reading comprehension processing,the researcher Analyzed the audible thinking and instant retelling materials of the subjects.The study found that from the knowledge used in answering questions,vocabulary knowledge is the primary factor that affects whether the two types of questions can be answered correctly.In the case of poor language processing,and students will use more non-linguistic knowledge to answer the gapped words task,and students will use the chapter knowledge to help them understand in the gapped text task.From the perspective of understanding and processing level,when doing the gapped words task,students generally understand the meaning of clauses through vocabulary collocation to complete the answer,and lessly construct the semantic relationship between the propositions;when facing the gapped text task,test-takers usually use related words,topic chains and other clues to speculate or construct semantic connections between propositions.But in the collected materials,test-takers are less likely to form a chapter-level understanding.That is to say,the logical relationship between sentences and paragraphs,the selected sentence and the paragraph or the core of the article is rarely mentioned and considered.In the case of unfavorable language processing,the pursuit of local understanding and the ignoring of the overall understanding of the reading goal make the test-takers more difficult to answer the gapped text task when answering more difficult gapped text task.Based on the above observations on the introspective materials of the test,this article believes that gapped words task and gapped text task are the two types of questions in the reading test,and there are differences in the measurement objectives.Choosing words and filling in the blanks requires candidates to correctly use vocabulary and grammar knowledge to understand the propositional meaning of the clauses.In addition to the vocabulary knowledge,the gapped text task can also examine the candidate’s textual knowledge such as cohesion and coherence.The candidate is required to form a chapter-level understanding of the reading content,and can also reflect the candidate’s strategic ability in understanding monitoring and goal setting.The research also found that there are some phenomena that test-takers rely on nonlin-guistic knowledge to answer questions correctly,and there is a certain threat to the validity of the test questions.In addition,if the vocabulary’s difficulty is low,it will be difficult to encourage students to make answering decisions through a higher level of understanding.Therefore,it will reduce the effectiveness of the exam of senior reading comprehension.
